Samsung J5 (2017) Hard Reset Guide

Soft Reset via Hardware Buttons:

NOTE: A soft reset simulates battery removal. Soft resetting the device can be useful if your phone is unresponsive etc. Soft resetting will not affect personal data stored on the phone.
Press and hold “Power” and “Volume Down” simultaneously
Keep both buttons pressed until the phone reboots


Hard Reset

NOTE: Hard resetting your phone will result in the deletion of all personal data located on the phone’s internal memory. This includes media files and ringtones, contacts, apps, downloaded content etc. Additionally, all settings will be restored to factory values.

Hard Reset via Settings:

Open the apps drawer
Launch “Settings” and access “Cloud and accounts”
Tap “Backup and restore”
Optionally, turn “Back up my data” and “Restore” On or Off
Return to “Settings”
Go to “General Management” and tap “Reset”
Tap “Factory data reset” > “Reset device”
If your phone is protected by a PIN / password etc. enter it and tap “Continue”
Tap “Delete all” to confirm

Hard Reset via Hardware Buttons:

NOTE: If your phone freezes, crashes, is unresponsive or otherwise it prevents you from resetting it via settings, alternatively you can try resetting the phone from the Recovery menu, which can be accessed by preforming a combination of button presses.

Ensure the phone is powered off


Next, press and hold “Volume Up” and “Home” at the same time, then tap and hold “Power”
At the “Android” logo, release all buttons and wait for access to Android Recovery
Once in Android Recovery, press “Volume down” repeatedly to navigate to and highlight “Wipe data / factory reset”
Press “Power” to select the highlighted option
Press “Volume down” to highlight “Yes – delete all user data”
Press “Power”
Once the phone resets, highlight “Reboot system now” and press “Power”

Reset Network Settings:

NOTE: By resetting network settings, all connection data including existing Wi-Fi and Bluetooth networks will be deleted. Additionally, network selection mode, background data, and data restrictive settings will be restored to default values.

Open the apps drawer


Launch “General management”
Tap “Reset” > “Reset network settings”
Tap “Reset settings” and if necessary, enter your PIN / password to proceed
Tap “Reset settings” to confirm.
